A Lullaby for Toby is an impressive feat of story-telling craft tailored for teenagers but accessible to anyone, young or old. The novel’s central character, Robin, is a high-school senior still tethered to his parents and struggling to work past a family crisis that could derail him at a critical juncture of his development. As an elderly reader, I found it to be a “page-turner,” because Robbie’s dilemma is so universal in so many ways. Mr Reynolds, a novelist and a film critic, has evidently mastered the mechanics of suspense and mystery. This story displays his keen sense of the family dynamics that might result from a crisis that divides parents and children. It is a tale about responsibility, recriminations, and reconciliation, and he has told it well.
